Founding Editors
Firefly's founding editors are Jamie Allen, Jane Moir and Melissa Brown.
Jamie Allen
Jamie is best known for being a co-founder and the first secretary general of the Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA), an independent research and advocacy organisation founded in Hong Kong in 1999 and covering the Asia-Pacific region. ACGA's premier publication is "CG Watch", a ranking of the quality of corporate and public governance in 12 major markets in north, south, and southeast Asia, as well as Australia. ACGA initiated a regulatory advocacy programme in 2003 that helped to bring about fundamental improvements in regulation, enforcement and shareholder rights in many markets, in particular Japan.
Jamie began his career as a reporter for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong in the late 1980s, specialising in environmental reporting. He moved on to becoming a business journalist with the Economist Intelligence Unit and during this time also contributed to The Economist magazine. Prior to ACGA's founding he ran his own boutique business research and consulting company, Allen Wong Associates. He retired from his role at ACGA after 25 years in 2024 and now lives in Sydney.
Jane Moir
Jane first lived in Hong Kong as a child during the 1980s and returned to work there for the majority of her career after a stint in Tokyo as a journalist for the Japan Times. Jane joined the South China Morning Post as a news reporter before moving to the business desk where she became familiar with the idiosyncrasies of Asian corporates.
After 15 years as a financial journalist, Jane switched careers to qualify as a barrister in 2012. She had a colourful civil and criminal practice which included matrimonial disputes involving the second and third generations of Asian tycoons. Jane then worked as a consultant advising on policy, regulation and legal regimes in the Asia-Pacific, before joining the Asian Corporate Governance Association in 2020. She left as Head of Research in November 2024 and now lives in London.
Melissa Brown
Melissa spent 33 years in Asia working in markets, first as an equity analyst and research director for investment banks and then with groups that mapped ESG and energy transition issues to Asian markets and investment strategies. As a result, she had an early look at some of Asia’s most consequential issuers in South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, India, and China. Melissa also gained practical insights about financial markets development while serving on UN PRI’s council, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange Listing Committee during the boom years of mainland issues, and as an investor in Sustainalytics.
More recently, Melissa has focused on a range of cross-cutting disciplines including energy system modelling, sustainable finance, and supply chain analytics. Now based in New York City, she continues to work with Asia-based teams on energy transition projects.
